I must respond to the previous reviews before I discuss mine. 1st-The same water does not sit in the base the entire time; it cycles through. 2nd-Any water that sits in any location for too long will grow bacteria. That is why they tell you to rinse the machine on a daily basis (as ALL humidifiers recommend). If you let it sit too long, the water will turn brown, but that is due to mineral deposits in the water. Using filtered or distilled water will minimize this, but so will rinsing out the unit on a daily basis. Regardless of the type of water used, the filter will build up deposits, which means it’s doing its job. That is why they recommend cleaning the filter and the entire unit on a weekly basis with vinegar. This is nothing unique to this particular unit; all humidifiers will require regular cleaning. 3rd-To rinse the base all you have to do is remove the filters and the reservoir. Nothing too difficult. This will occur with ALL humidifiers. You cannot expect to have a machine that uses water and expect not to have to clean it. Leave some water in a bucket for a few days and see what happens. Moisture left to be will breed bacteria eventually. If you use this unit on a daily basis, rinse and clean it regularly. If you use it occasionally, then make sure it’s dry before it sits there for any amount of time. 4th-I have 3 of these units and not one leaks. You probably got a defective one.
MY REVIEW: I purchased 4 other brands of humidifiers before trying and choosing this one. It is the best I have found in a decent price range. I now own 3 in varying sizes for my home. It is very efficient and puts the moisture out very well. This size will run for quite awhile without needing a refill. It is simple to clean; it comes apart easily and the permafilter is nice because you only have to clean it in water and vinegar and not spend $$ on new filters. The fan is louder on high but it is a soothing, constant noise and really much quieter than others I have tried. It works well when sleeping because it is like white noise. Low and medium are pretty quiet and I am able to keep it on medium in my living room even when I’m watching TV or reading. I measure the humidity in my home and these Hunter’s really work quite quickly and efficiently. I highly recommend this unit!

Most of the people here seem to not have much experience with these types of evaporative humidifiers. Short of installing a dedicated humidifier unit onto a central HVAC duct, these are the cleanest, most energy efficient humidifiers available. Hunter’s Permawick with water pump design is very effective and eliminates the need to buy expensive paper filters two or possibly even three times each winter.
The humidifier doesn’t require the weekly or even daily maintenance of paper wick filters IF you follow some simple guidelines. First, add a couple spoonfuls of bleach to the tray every few days; don’t waste your money on expensive “humidifier treatment solutions”. Yes, it will smell like you just cleaned a bathroom, but it will dissipate by the end of the day and is enough to prevent bacteria growth. Doing this prevents bacterial sludge from building up in the machine and prevents clogging and leaking. It takes 30 seconds and you don’t have to take apart the machine each week to clean it. Second, at the end of winter, you must clean out the mineral deposits. The most cost effective way of doing this is to soak the metal permawicks in a bucket of boiling vinegar. This is much cheaper than wasting your money on CLR crap. After the bucket cools, rinse out the permawicks and dry. Use the standing vinegar to scrub out the tray and water pump impeller parts with a soft plastic tub scrubber or sponge.
The instructions for the humidifier don’t tell you how to do these things. Then again, anyone with half a brain should understand: 1) the need to sanitize a machine that cycles room air through a moist chamber and 2) the need to demineralize a machine that churns through hundreds of gallons of water each winter.
I’m on my fourth winter, now, with my Hunter humidifier, and it’s so much cleaner and less of a hassle than the stupid paper-wick model I had before. And no white dust like the misting model I had before that.

Live in Phoenix, Arizona and need humidity just to survive the dry air here. This unit claimed to be quiet and included anti-microbial in nature. I will say, these claimes are not a fair representation of the product. Always had problems with mildew buildup, even when using the chemicals requested by manufacturer. After a few days the unit started to vibrate to the point the dishwasher is considered tolerable. We would have to shim the water tank with folded paper and toothpicks to get vibrations to lessen. Sometimes a smack on the side did the trick. After two months the unit started to leak out the intake vents.
Unit requires refilling every 22 hours or so on medium fan speed. All in all, I think this unit gives humidifiers a bad wrap as I am sure you can get a better unit with less hassles. As it is, $50 is a lot to spend on a night light.

I bought 2 of these humidifiers. They worked well for about 3 months. The humidifiers stopped distributing mist properly and started “spitting” water. The fans also became noiser and began to work unevenly on lower settings causing a squeeking sound. I’ve cleaned the humidiers regularily. I’m going to throw the Hunter humidifiers away and try a different brand.

I’m on my 4th one for this humidifier (I have the one w/o the night light)
LIKES
1) no filter to replace
2) relatively easy cleaning (just soak in vinegar/water and brush)
3) quiet enough for me to sleep on LOW
4) large 2.5 container so dont need to refill frequently
5) it works! i sleep better, and my hygrometer proves it
DISLIKES
1) it breaks down and stops working or leaks, or gurgles after 1 or 2 months
2) gets to be noisy when on MED (specially on HIGH)
